About Sustainability and OASIS

What is Sustainability?

Sustainability means meeting the economic, social, and environmental needs of the present without compromising the similar needs of future generations.

SUSTAINABILITY IS A PROCESS.

We (OASIS) engage directly with the community around us to make sustainability real. We collaborate with the NMSU Administration, NMSU Sustainability & Climate Change Task Force, NMSU College of Agriculture, NM Border Health, City of Las Cruces, Las Cruces Public Schools, Organic Farmers, Mesilla Bicycle Coalition, and other groups or individuals who are interested in creating a sustainable community.

OASIS members work hard at planning and organizing community awareness and outreach events. Since Spring 2008, OASIS has organized five community outreach events, one community awareness event, attended two organic farm field trips, and presented a proposal of the Talloires Declaration to former NMSU Interim President Waded Cruzado and Administrators.

With a vast support of student interests on sustainability, Interim President Waded Cruzado agrees to sign the Talloires Declaration and declares 2009 as NMSU's Year of Sustainability.
